Can people develop an addiction to prescribed medication?
A recent study done by NIDA (National Institute of Drug Abuse) reveal that the abuse of prescribed pain medication ranks second, only behind marijuana, as the Nation’s most common illegal drug problem.
Who is to blame?
In many cases Doctors misdiagnose their patients and hand them drugs. Doctors must use extreme caution when prescribing drugs and medication due to obvious health hazards. Thousands of lives are lost each year from misuse or abuse of prescribed medication and many more due to improper diagnosis.

Prescription medication is abused just as illegal drugs, over the counter medication, alcohol, and nicotine is abused. You ask who is to blame for the abuse of prescription medication and then give the responsibility of abuse to the doctors that prescribe the medication to the patient. Sorry to inform you but the patient’s abuse of prescription medications is not the fault of the doctor prescribing the medication but that abuse falls solely on the individual abusing the prescription.
ReplyDeletePatients go to the doctor and describe symptoms they suffer from and then the doctor prescribes them medication based on the information he is given. The majority of doctors first prescribe non-addictive medication as a means to prevent addiction. However you have patients that go to the doctor making false claims of symptoms they are suffering from in an attempt to receive the medication they are seeking. The doctor is simply doing his job of analysis and treatment based on signs and symptoms available. The doctor gives directions on how and when the medication is to be used. The abuse can then only fall on the individual who chooses to neglect doctor’s orders and inadvisably use the medication in question.
